Buyer's guide · updated August 2026

Best yard management software, 2026.

Ranked by fit, not by feature count, because a 500-door network and a 60-truck-a-day yard should not buy the same system.

Short answer: there is no single best YMS. Enterprise networks with hardware budgets are served by Kaleris and C3 Solutions. Dock-appointment-first operations fit Opendock or DataDocks. Fleets already on Samsara get yard visibility from telematics. Small and mid-size yards that want no fixed hardware and a published price are the gap Vantage targets, from $149 a month.

Pricing status checked on each vendor's public site, August 2026. "Quote-only" means no public price list. Review-count context from public Capterra listings, August 2026: Samsara ~1,018, YardView 27, DataDocks 22 in adjacent categories; most pure-YMS vendors carry under 30 reviews, which says this market is early, not that the tools are bad.

Picks by situation

Enterprise, multi-site, automation budget

Kaleris (PINC) and C3 Solutions

If you run a network of large facilities and can fund fixed readers plus an integration project, the enterprise vendors earn their quotes: RFID-scale tracking, deep WMS/TMS integration, and implementation teams. That is real value we do not pretend to replace. The trade-off is the entry ticket: quote-only pricing and a deployment measured in months.

Dock appointments first

Opendock and DataDocks

If your bottleneck is the appointment book rather than the yard itself, a dock-first tool is the right shape. Opendock brings a large carrier network to the booking side. DataDocks is a clean scheduler with steady reviews. The honest caveat cuts both ways: dock-first tools are lighter on live yard inventory, exactly where yard-first tools like ours are lighter on carrier-network booking.

Fleet already on telematics

Samsara

If your trailers already carry Samsara gateways, you get yard-adjacent visibility from hardware you own, with by far the largest review base in the adjacent category. It is fleet-side tracking, though: it follows your equipment, not every carrier's trailer that enters your yard.

Small and mid-size yards, no hardware

Vantage

This is the segment we built for, because it is the segment the quote-only market prices out. The gate clerk's phone is the scanner: equipment numbers are captured by camera with 5-stage AI validation, every gate move gets a timestamp, and the yard map updates live. Container numbers additionally get the ISO 6346 check-digit math, a genuine mathematical test. No equivalent math exists for US equipment numbers, so those get format and history checks instead. Published pricing from $149 a month, a 14-day free trial, and no install crew. What we do not have: RFID automation, a carrier booking network the size of Opendock's, or a decade of enterprise references. If you need those, buy up the list.

How to choose in 15 minutes

1. Count your daily gate moves. Fixed-hardware automation makes sense at high daily gate volume across multiple sites; for most small and mid-size yards the install cost is the whole problem. 2. Ask every vendor for a price in writing. If the answer is a discovery call, budget five to six figures a year. 3. Check what a detention dispute costs you today. Detention shows up on 39.3% of stops and the industry loses about $15B a year to it (ATRI, 2024); a YMS that timestamps arrivals pays for itself in disputes first. Our sourced numbers are in the 2026 yard & detention benchmarks, and the savings calculator turns your own volumes into hours.
